ENG: Question number one, what made you write the thriller genre?
ITA: Domanda numero uno, cosa ti ha spinto a scrivere il genere thriller?

ENG: Before I wrote The Tattoo Thief, I had tried writing various other sorts of books and also screenplays, but throughout this time crime thrillers were always what I would read for pleasure. When the idea for The Tattoo Thief came to me, it suddenly seemed obvious that this is the genre I should be writing in, and I wondered why I hadn’t thought of it before.

ITA: Prima di scrivere IL LADRO DI TATUAGGI, avevo provato a scrivere vari altri tipi di libri e sceneggiature, ma per tutto questo tempo i thriller polizieschi erano sempre ciò che avrei letto per piacere. Quando mi è venuta l’idea del ladro di tatuaggi, all’improvviso mi è sembrato ovvio che questo è il genere di cui avrei dovuto scrivere e mi chiedevo perché non ci avevo mai pensato prima.

ENG: I love the Tattoo thief (il ladro di tatuaggi italian version), how much study does it take to develop such a plot?
ITA: Io amo il ladro di tatuaggi, quanto studio ci vuole per sviluppare una trama del genere?

ENG: The idea for The Tattoo Thief came to me directly as a result of having my tattoo. I had wanted a tattoo for a long, long time and in 2016 I finally decided the time was right to get one. On the night after my first session with my tattoo artist, I couldn’t sleep as I was so thrilled to have a tattoo at last. I thought to myself, ‘Now I have it, no one can take it away.’ And then I thought, ‘But what if somebody did?’ – and that was the seed for the story about a killer who steals people’s tattoos. Doing the research came easily – I’ve always been fascinated by tattoos and tattooing, and I love going to tattoo conventions.

ITA: L’idea del ladro di tatuaggi mi è venuta direttamente a seguito del mio tatuaggio. Volevo un tatuaggio da molto, molto tempo e nel 2016 ho finalmente deciso che era il momento giusto per ottenerne uno. La notte dopo la mia prima sessione con il mio tatuatore, non riuscivo a dormire perché ero così elettrizzato di fare finalmente un tatuaggio. Ho pensato tra me e me: “Ora ce l’ho, nessuno può portarlo via”. E poi ho pensato: “Ma cosa succederebbe se qualcuno lo facesse?” – e quello era il seme della storia di un killer che ruba i tatuaggi delle persone. Fare la ricerca è arrivata facilmente: sono sempre stata affascinata dai tatuatori e dai tatuaggi e adoro andare alle convention su di essi.

ENG: how did your passion for writing come about?
ITA: Come è arrivata la tua passione per la scrittura?

ENG: It’s hard to say. Like most writers, it’s something that I wanted to do since early childhood. I think that creative urge is present in many people – whether it’s a need to write, to paint, to make music or whatever.

ITA: È difficile da dire. Come la maggior parte degli scrittori, è qualcosa che volevo fare fin dalla prima infanzia. Penso che l’impulso creativo sia presente in molte persone, sia che si tratti di scrivere, dipingere, fare musica o altro.

ENG: When did they propose to translate the tattoo thief and the tattoo artist into Italian, what did you feel?
ITA: Quando ti hanno proposto di tradurre “il ladro di tatuaggi” e “il tatuatore” in Italiano cosa hai provato?

ENG: Getting a book published in your own language is exciting, but when you learn that publishers in other countries are interested too, that takes it up to a whole new level. I’ve had such an extraordinary response to The Tattoo Thief and to its sequel, Her Last Breath in Italy. One of my favourite moments was when I was on holiday, shortly after The Tattoo Thief was published, and I came across the Italian version on sale in a tiny village in Tuscany – it’s so exciting to see my words travelling all around the world and to hear about people in different countries enjoying the story.

ITA: Pubblicare un libro nella tua lingua è entusiasmante, ma quando scopri che anche gli editori di altri paesi sono interessati, questo porta a un livello completamente nuovo. Ho avuto una risposta così straordinaria al ladro di tatuaggi e al suo sequel. Uno dei miei momenti preferiti è stato quando ero in vacanza, poco dopo la pubblicazione del ladro di tatuaggi e mi sono imbattuto nella versione italiana in vendita in un piccolo villaggio in Toscana – è così emozionante vedere le mie parole viaggiare in tutto il mondo e sentire parlare di persone in diversi paesi che si godono la storia.

ENG: are you working on any other books?
ITA: Stai lavorando ad altri libri in questo momento?

ENG: I am – as a writer, I never stop! The third book in the series is finished and I’m going through the editing process now. It will come out some time towards the end of this year, I hope. I’m also working on a trilogy of books with my brother – crime stories set in Afghanistan, as he spent four years working out there. These are very new and I don’t know yet where or when they’ll be published.

ITA: Lo sto facendo, come scrittrice non mi fermo mai! Il terzo libro della serie è finito e ora sta attraversando il processo di editing.
Spero che uscirà verso la fine di quest’anno.
Sto anche lavorando a una trilogia di libri con mio fratello, storie di criminalità ambientate in Afghanistan, mentre ha trascorso 4 anni lavorando lì.
Sono una cosa nuova e non so ancora dove o quando veranno pubblicati.

ENG: have you ever thought about doing a booktour in Italy?
ITA: Hai mai pensato a un firmacopie in Italia?

ENG: I would love to do a book tour of Italy! I just hope one day that my Italian publishers ask me to do one.

ITA: mi piacerebbe molto fare un firmacopie in Italia! Spero che un giorno il mio editore italiano mi chieda di farne uno.

ENG: what was the first book you wrote? What was it talking?
ITA: qual è stato il tuo primo libro? Di cosa parlava?

ENG: The Tattoo Thief was the first book I wrote that got published – but there were several before that, while I was building my skill as a writer – a political thriller, a children’s book, a story about a girl drummer in a rock band… As I said, the urge to write has always been there.

ITA: Il ladro di tatuaggi è stat oil primo libro che ho scritto e pubblicato, ma ce ne sono stati diversi prima, mentre stavo sviluppando le mie abilità da autrice. Un thriller politico, un libro per bambini, una storia su una ragazza batterista in una rock band. Come ho detto, la voglia di scrivere è sempre stata li.

ENG: would you like to write other types of books too? For example romance or fantasy?
ITA: ti piacerebbe scrivere altri tipi di libri? Ad esempio romance o fantasy?

ENG: I don’t think I would – I don’t particularly read romance or fantasy novels, so it probably wouldn’t be a good idea to attempt to write one.

ITA: Non penso che lo farei, non leggo particolarmente rosa o fantasy quindi probabilmente non sarebbe una buona idea tentare di scriverne uno.

ENG: what would you say to your Italian readers to convince them to read you?
ITA: Cosa diresti ai lettori italiani per convincerli a leggerti?

ENG: Whether or not you’ve got a tattoo, The Tattoo Thief series are fast-paced and sometimes terrifying crime thrillers. A young police inspector is on his first murder case, thrown into a world he doesn’t understand, and he turns for help to the tattoo artist who discovered the first body. Together, they must track down the Tattoo Thief before more people die…  These two main characters are re-united in the second and third book in the series, as Brighton is once again caught in the terror of a serial killer at large.

ITA: Che tu abbia o meno un tatuaggio, la serie del ladro di tatuaggi è un thriller poliziesco, frenetico e talvolta terrificante. Un giovane ispettore di polizia è nel suo primo caso di omicidio, gettato in un mondo che non capisce e si rivolge in aiuto al tatuatore che ha scoperto il primo corpo. Insieme, devono rintracciare il ladro di tatuaggi prima che muoiano altre persone. Questi due personaggi principali sono riuniti nel secondo e nel terzo libro della serie, mentre Brighton è di nuovo catturato dal terrore di un serial killer in generale.
